Mi mami, una mujer tan valiente y con muchos sacrificios, siempre me decía que yo podía ser lo que yo quisiera ser. Este libro es dedicado a mi mami y a todas las palabras de aliento que me decía cuando yo era niña. Cada palabra que yo teji en este libro me transporta a los recuerdos de todo lo que yo y mi familia sufrimos. Pero en que sufrimos, las palabras de mi mami nunca me harían sentir mal. Cada vez que ella me decía que “¡sí se puede!” la vida se sentía mía.

Este libro es hecho de servilletas que yo y mi mami tejimos y de tarjetas de lotería. Las servilletas tienen un olor y sentido de cuando vivía con mi mami y cuando ella hacía tortillas todos los días. Las cartas de lotería me recuerdan de mis niñez y jugando afuera en la casa de mi abuela con mi familia. Este libro es una reflexión de mi niñez y de las cosas que mi mami me decía para que fuera una niña llena de sueños.

My mom, a woman full of so much strength and sacrifice, always told me I could be whatever I wanted to be. This book is dedicated to my mom and to all the words of encouragement she spoke to me when I was a child. Every word I stitched into this book transported me back to the memories of all the hardships my family and I endured. Yet, amidst that suffering, my mom’s words never failed me. Every time she told “si se puede! (yes you can!)” life felt truly mine.

This book is made from traditional servilletas (Mexican cloth napkins) that my mom and I embroidered and crotched, and traditional lotería cards. The servilletas carry the scent and essence of the time I still lived at home. She would make tortillas every day and the smell will always be engrained into my head. The lotería cards remind me of my childhood, of playing outside at my abuela’s house with my extended family. This book is a reflection of my childhood and of the things my mom told me to ensure I would grow into a woman full of hopes and dreams.
