What child does not dream of going on an adventure into the great unknown in search of treasure? This was my singular thought when deciding on a concept for this project and exhibition. A trove of ideas flooded through my brain when this concept came to me. Thus, I decided to literally create a trove of ideas in the form of a chest filled with treasure fit for a king. The hand-sewn leather-bound book at the center was left empty so that a child would be able to fill the pages with all of their adventures they always dreamt of embarking on.

The chest itself, made from bookboard, has been painted to appear as a real chest. With black painted cross sections to make it appear that metal is holding the chest together. Several planks on the chest have been made to appear broken to give the chest an old and worn style to it. Nuts and bolts are used to hold the chest together.

The brown, leather-bound book has been hand-sewn using a bright yellow wax-linen thread along the binding to create the appearance of gold coins. The book is held shut with a leather strap that wraps around the book before wrapping underneath itself to hold it shut. The paper inside the book is a medium weight drawing paper with a yellowish tint.

This image shows a page from my sketch book when I was coming up with ideas for my final design. Many elements shown in the sketches such as having mechanical components and multiple books, were unable to be present in the final design due to extenuating life circumstances.

This strip of cardstock was used as a template to create the binding to the leather-bound book. It was carefully prepared to ensure accurate measurements and a symmetrical design along the binding of the book.
