Carousel Archive No. 1 | From Inside, Out

Materials and Techniques

Butter board, slide carousel, lamp base, laser cutting

This piece reimagines the book as an illuminated object, constructed from laser-cut butter board silhouettes arranged radially within a repurposed slide carousel. Forty scenes encircle a warm central light, creating the glow of a bedside lamp during childhood story time. The scenes shown in the silhouette cutouts move through a key difference in atmosphere that I felt as a child in both interior spaces that feel constrained and muted to expansive and liberating outdoor moments. The vignettes place the viewer within moments of flying kites, fishing at a lake, and wandering through dense forests and open fields. The carousel, once used to project captured moments, becomes a device for cycling through personal narrative, suggesting memory is not linear but constantly in motion. This work reflects how early experiences in nature shaped my sense of curiosity, play, and freedom, and invites viewers to read memory through light, shadow, and the quiet wonder of returning to childhood.
